Santa Clara University- Aug 23, 2018

Father Tom Reese SJ  spoke about the recent revelations of the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church.

The news of the sexual abuse has rocked the Catholic Church around the world.   A favorite commentator, Jesuit Tom Reese,  spoke on the allegations of abuse and touched upon a former Washington, D.C., Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and the extensive report of the Pennsylvania Attorney General.

Decades of Revelations of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in the United States have been covered up  and have led both to unbridled outrage and finally – reform.

Recent news of the McCarrick scandal and the degree of abuse and coverup in the Pennsylvania report have pointed to a problem that goes beyond past examinations and that calls out for much deeper reforms.

Well – loved and hughly respected, Fr Tom Reese is a columnist for the Religion News Service and a frequent commentator on Catholic matters on major television networks and a former editor of America magazine

He recently spoke clearly and candidly to Judy Woodruff on NPR re the horrific Philadelphia Sex Abuse Scandal.

Cardinal Bernard Law, who resigned in disgrace as Boston’s archbishop in 2002 after the priest sex abuse scandal exploded in the United States, has retired from his subsequent job as head of a major Roman basilica.

We all know Dreamers

Jesuit Father Thomas Reese said he was representing Jesuits from the West Coast

and other Jesuits, who know exactly who “Dreamers” are.

“They are our students, sitting in our classrooms, they are our parishioners, kneeling in our churches,” he said.

“They are our friends, they are our colleagues who have invited us into their homes.”

We all know Dreamers…

Oh, Brother! Really? Fr Tom Reese asks the good questions

consensus through ambiguity

“Thanks to a perceptive question by Thomas J. Reese, S.J., former editor in chief of America and currently a columnist for the National Catholic Reporter.

Brother Herve Janson, a member of the Little Brothers of Jesus, an order noted for its poverty and simplicity, was one of the participants at the daily press briefing. It was noted that he was also a voting member.

Father Reese asked, rightly, “What is the rationale for you being admitted to the synod and religious women not being admitted to the synod?”

What does that mean? Basically, Brother Janson is not ordained. Some may not be aware of this tradition, but you can be a member of a men’s religious order and not be ordained: thus the term “Brother.”

Brother Janson is neither a bishop, nor a priest, nor a deacon. Technically, his canonical “status” in the church is that of a layman. That is, he has the same “status” as that of a woman religious, or in common parlance, a Catholic sister. And the same status as a laywoman as well.

In response to Fr. Reese’s question, which produced some uncomfortable laughter from the other panelists (who immediately grasped the challenging nature of the question): Brother Janson said “That is a big question…I felt very uncomfortable …Before, the distinction was between cleric and lay. And now, it became between man and woman, exactly as you said very well…I asked myself the same question.” Strikingly, Brother Janson said he thought of refusing the invitation to be a voting member, out of solidarity with women religious.”

“This is a serious failure for the Synod.

Previously, at least as far as I had known, it seemed that ordination was a prerequisite for voting. That is, there were priests who were appointed, in addition to the bishops, as voting members. There were strong theological arguments that could be advanced for that: it was a synod of bishops, and, in Catholic theology, priests participate in the ministry of the bishop through the sacrament of holy.”

Jesuit officials say America editor resigned after Vatican complaints

By John Thavis
Catholic News Service

ROME (CNS) —

Jesuit officials in Rome said Father Thomas Reese resigned as editor in chief of America magazine after repeated complaints from then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who objected to the magazine’s treatment of sensitive church issues.

Jesuit Father Jose M. de Vera, spokesman for the Society of Jesus in Rome, said Father Reese decided to resign after discussing the situation with his Jesuit superiors, following Cardinal Ratzinger’s election as Pope Benedict XVI. Father de Vera denied reports that Father Reese was forced to resign, but he acknowledged that pressure had been coming from the Vatican for several years.”

Thank Heaven for Fr Tom Reese
